The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud

Just 50 minutes from the camping Parc de Montsabert.

A huge, cloistered complex founded in the early 12th century (Romanesque architecture) and partially converted over the centuries (architecture from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries),the  Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. 

Highlights:

  • Recumbent statues of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenet - multicoloured recumbent statues of the Plantagenet kings (13th century): Henri II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Isabelle of Angoulême in the abbey church featuring a line of cupolas (12th century)
  • The octagonal Romanesque kitchen with its fireplaces, a one-of-a-kind in France
  • The chapter house and its murals (16th century)
